As you edit a rule group which reviews another player's bid, keep in mind
there is one quality that is set differently from all other qualities, the
meaning of a bid.
When a player sets the meaning of a bid, that player is setting the meaning
for both themself and their partner. For example, responder reviews opener's
first bid and sets the quality my partner's first bid to the value
one in a suit. At any time later, when responder tests the quality
my partner's first bid, the value will be one in a suit. In
addition, when opener tests the quality my first bid, the value will
also be one in a suit. Opener does not need to set this value,
responder set the value for them both. This is the only quality which is set
in this manner.
There are two reasons for setting the meaning of a bid this way. First, it
makes it simpler to have the meaning set in one place, rather than having to
set it once for one player and again for the player's partner. Second this
ensures that both partner's are thinking the same way about the same bid.
When a player sets the meaning of a bid, this does not affect the meaning of
the bid to their opponents.
